New Play to Premiere at Vitality Festival

July 1, 2006 -- One of my new plays has been selected for production in Speaking Ring Theatre's fourth annual Vitality Festival. The Shimmering Souldust of Matotanea is one of nine finalists, selected from a pool of more than 140 plays submitted from around the country.

The nine plays will be produced over two weekends in August. A jury panel of local artistic directors, writers, producers and critics will judge the produced plays and select a winner. But, of course, just being in the final running is enough of a "win" for me.

This will be the first time one of my works will be produced by someone else. It's a relinquishment of control that I imagine will be good for me. Like medicine. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out. Even with the relative amount of "control" I had over The One-Eyed Cat and other shows, there was considerable nail-biting involved.

I will also be performing as an actor in another one of the festival's plays, His Critical Condition, which was no shoo-in just because I'm one of the writers. They saw a hundred people just at the callbacks!

The festival runs the first two weekends of August. Each of the plays gets four performances over the six nights of the festival. The exact schedule hasn't been nailed down yet, but you can watch the calendar to find out when you can check out the world premiere of The Shimmering Souldust of Matotanea or see me perform in His Critical Condition.

UPDATE: My play did not win the grand prize, but I'm still happy to be among the finalists!
